6th Volunteer Battalion Manchester Regiment 1881 - 1908

The tradition of a Corps of Volunteer Infantry in the Greater Manchester area can be traced to 1803 when the following were established;

Loyal Wigan Infantry, Hulme Volunteers, M/cr. & Salford Volunteer Infantry, St George’s Volunteers 1st M/cr. & Salford Volunteers, 2nd M/cr. & Salford Regiment, Ashton-u-Lyne Volunteers and the  Loyal Oldham Volunteers. They were gradually disbanded after the Napoleonic threat was over.

In 1859 they were absorbed into battalions of the Lancashire Rifle volunteer Corps and in 1881-1889 were formed into 6 Volunteer Battalions of the Manchester Regiment. The designation changed again in 1908 to Territorial force battalions of the Manchester Regiment.

This is a very fine example.
